How to Set up Hosting for Your Portfolio Site – Pt. 2

In part one, we went through the process of setting up a hosting account at www.1and1.com. In part two, we will show you how to add a domain to your web hosting account, as well as how to locate the nameserver information you need to modify the DNS information for your domain.

You can choose any web host you like; however, the exact process will be different, but the ideas presented here should apply.
To get started, log in to your 1&1 Control Panel at https://admin.1and1.com. Use the customer ID and password you chose during the order process.

Tip: Once you add a domain name to our hosting package, you can log in with your domain name instead of your customer ID.

The Control Panel allows you to manage all aspects of your web hosting account and domains. To add a your web site domain, click on the Domains button.

The Domain Overview page allows you to add domains to your account and set up where the files for your web site will be stored. You will notice there is already a domain name listed here: s[9digits].onlinehome.us. This is the default domain for your account, and you can access it while waiting for your added domain to take effect.
Click on the “New” menu item, and select “Add Domain” from the drop down menu.

Enter your domain name in the Domain Check text field and click “Check Domain”.

If you have already registered your domain name, it will give you two options: Transfer of registrar to 1&1 -OR- Point DNS to 1&1 name servers and keep your current registrar. The registrar is the company you used to register your domain name. If you followed our Domain Registration guide, your registrar is GoDaddy.com.

You do not need to transfer the registrar of your domain, so we will choose the second option: Point DNS to 1&1 name servers and keep your current registrar and click Next.

Now you can choose how you want your email handled for the new domain. We will select the second option: Use the 1&1 mail servers. Click Next.

The following page contains the nameserver information you will need later on. Write down BOTH nameserver addresses! You will need them later. When you have copied the nameserver settings, click Order.

Tip: Copy the nameserver settings directly from the web page (ctrl+c) and paste into a text document (ctrl+p). This will ensure they are correct.

The next page is a confirmation page. Click go to Overview to return to the Domain Overview screen.
Your domain should now be listed. If you look at the Status column, you will notice it says “DNS settings incomplete with registrar.”

You will need to add the nameserver settings you copied to your domain registrar. Please refer to our “How to Set up the Nameservers for Your Domain” guide for instructions.

Once you have updated the nameserver information at the domain registrar, it will take between 24-48 hours for the changes to propagate across the Internet. Your web site will then be accessible from your domain name!
