Digital File Prep for Printing

What I would like to address today is the basic procedure for printing art from a digital file. Let’s begin with the initial setup. The industry standard for digital output of graphic files is 300 dpi (dots per inch). That is the standard, but there is a reason behind it, which should be taken into account before you decide on what you want your resolution to be. The rule of resolution is that the dpi should be twice your lines per inch (lpi or line screen) of the actual printing device. 300 comes from most high end full color printers outputting at 150 lpi. However, many film setters can print up to 350 lpi for really fine screens.
