The Studio

An example: My studio!
Here are some shots of my studio. It’s a bit messy, but that’s how I feel the most comfortable, and that’s important to me…

Here we see a shot of the main working area. Notice a few things:
- Since I work on both the computer and the drawing table, I have them right next to each other. I just need to turn my chair around!
- The window is to the LEFT of the drawing table! This is because I’m right-handed, so the shadow falls away from my drawing surface, not over it.
- All my office equipment (computer, fax, printer, scanner, etc.) is in the same area.
- I don’t know if you can see it too well here, but I keep my most often-used paper nearby on the bottom shelves to the right of the table. I have my less-used, specialty paper in a closet.
- My desk and my shelves are very open and flexible. No frills, no cubbyholes… this keeps my space flexible and makes it easy to get to everything.
- The garbage is full. I really need to empty it.

Here’s a close up of the drawing area. You can see that I keep all sorts of things handy – light box, taborets, a mirror, electric pencil sharpener, and lots of drawers and shelves.
- I have a light on each side (the big one on the left is a color-corrected Ott-light). I turn on the smaller one on the right when I need to get rid of shadows on the right side.
- That spinner for pencils and pens and stuff is very cool. I keep all my most commonly used tools there.
- I keep all my various templates, paints, brushes, pens, rollers, sanding paper, etc. in the many drawers you see around me. There’s a lot of stuff there, but everything has its place.
